Book metadata
Structured information attached to a book (title, author, keywords, categories, language) that determines its visibility in retail platforms' search engines.
On KDP as on other platforms, metadata isn't mere description: the keywords and categories you choose determine which search results and rankings the book appears in. Two books with identical content can sell very differently depending on the quality of their metadata.
A well-formed EPUB file also embeds its metadata directly in the code (title, author, language, identifier): that's what e-readers read to display the book's information in their library.
