Ebook vs print book
A comparison of the two publishing formats, each with its own costs, sales channels and margins for a self-published author.
An ebook has no manufacturing or storage cost: each sale is a copy of the same file. The margin per sale is therefore generally higher for the author, and launch is immediate once the file is ready.
A print book involves a printing cost (per unit through print on demand, or in bulk), stricter layout constraints (margins, binding, paper weight) and delivery times. It is nevertheless seen as more legitimate by part of the public, and allows sales at signings and book fairs.
Most self-published authors start with digital, which has zero cost and allows quick market tests, before considering a print edition if the book finds its audience.
