Three versions of your back cover blurb, ready to make people want to read.
Your blurb is ready. What's left is the book: Makebook writes it with you, chapter by chapter, in your voice.

The back cover is the last filter before purchase. The reader has flipped your book over or scrolled your listing: you have a few seconds to make them want it. A good blurb doesn't summarize the book, it creates a gap that only reading can fill.
For a novel, start from the character and what they stand to lose. For a how-to book, start from the problem your reader has and the transformation you promise. In both cases: a strong first sentence, short sentences, and a last line that leaves things hanging.
Compare the three versions, keep the one that sounds the most right and bring in your own words. Avoid vague superlatives ("gripping", "must-read"): a precise detail makes people want it more than a compliment.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a back cover blurb be?
Between 150 and 200 words is ideal: enough to intrigue or convince, short enough to be read in a few seconds in a bookstore or on an online listing.
What goes on the back cover of a novel?
A hook, the character and their desire, the obstacle, the stakes. Never the ending. The goal is to raise a question the reader will want to answer by reading.
And for a how-to or self-help book?
Talk about the reader's problem, the book's promise, what they'll be able to do after reading it, then your credibility in one sentence.
