With a title and a subtitle in hand, all that's left is to write. Makebook guides you to the finished book.

The guide

The subtitle works as a team with the title. If the title intrigues, the subtitle reassures: it says exactly what the reader will find in the book.

A good structure: "How to [get a result] without [common obstacle]". You can also announce a method ("in 5 steps"), an audience ("for beginners") or a timeframe ("in 30 days"), as long as you keep that promise.

Read your subtitle out loud. If it's hard to say in one breath, shorten it: covers and online thumbnails don't leave much room.

Frequently asked questions

What is a book subtitle for?

It explains the book's promise: for whom, what result, by what means. It's also what helps online stores show you in search results.

How long should a subtitle be?

Between ten and fifteen words in general. Long enough to be specific, short enough to stay readable on a cover.

How do you write an effective subtitle?

Name the reader, the result they get and, if possible, the timeframe or the method. Avoid vague words like "amazing" or "ultimate".
