The guide

The title is the first thing your reader sees, and sometimes the only one. It has to do three things: catch the eye, say what the book is about, and make people want to know more.

For non-fiction, a reliable formula pairs a catchy title with a subtitle that spells out the benefit: for example "The intriguing title: the clear promise for whom, in how long". For a novel, lean on emotion and imagery instead.

Keep several options, say them to people close to you and watch their first reaction. The one they remember without effort is often the right one.

Frequently asked questions

How do you come up with a good book title?

A good title is short, memorable and makes a promise. Say it out loud: if a stranger understands who it's for and what they get out of it, you're on the right track.

Do I need a subtitle?

For non-fiction, yes: the title grabs attention, the subtitle sharpens the promise and also helps your book get found in online stores.

How long should a book title be?

Ideally under six words for the title. The subtitle can be longer, around ten to fifteen words.
