The guide

Dialogue isn't conversation, it's a polite confrontation. Every line should move the story forward or reveal a character, preferably both.

Describe clearly what each person wants: the scene produced shows how they clash without admitting it.

Avoid dialogue that only serves to inform the reader. If the information has to get across, make it pass through a conflict.

Frequently asked questions

How do you write good dialogue?

Each character wants something from the other and doesn't say it directly. What goes unsaid matters as much as what's said.

What is subtext?

It's the hidden meaning behind the words: anger under a polite sentence, fear under a joke.

Should you write the way people talk?

Almost: dialogue that is realistic but tighter than real conversation, without the useless hesitations.
