The guide

Choosing your category means choosing your competitors. In a very broad category, your book is invisible. In a more specific one, a good launch can put you on the bestseller list and earn you a badge that reassures buyers.

Start from what your book really is, then from where your reader would look for it on a shelf. Look at similar books on Amazon: their listing shows the categories they're ranked in.

The leads generated here are theme directions. Then find the matching sections in KDP's selection tool, whose names change over time.

Frequently asked questions

How many categories can you pick on KDP?

You pick up to three at publication, and you can request more from KDP support. Check the current rules in your dashboard.

Why does the category matter?

It places your book on the shelves where your readers browse. A category that's too broad drowns you, one that's too narrow attracts no one.

Are the suggested categories official?

They're theme leads. Exact names change: find the equivalents in KDP's category selector.
