EPUB

The standard file format for digital books, whose text adapts to the size of the screen (e-reader, tablet, phone).

EPUB (Electronic Publication) is an open format that structures a book as compressed HTML/CSS rather than fixed pages like a PDF. The big advantage: the text automatically reflows depending on the font size and the reading device, so a Kindle, a tablet or a smartphone all display the same content in a readable way.

It's the format expected by almost every ebook retailer: Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, and most self-publishing stores. Amazon KDP has also accepted EPUB since 2021 (it converts it internally).

A valid EPUB has to follow strict structural rules (metadata, navigable table of contents, encoding): a malformed file can be rejected by a platform or display badly on the reader's device.

Worth remembering with Makebook

Makebook automatically generates a validated EPUB (EPUBCheck-compliant) alongside the PDF, with nothing to configure.
