Public domain
The status of a work whose economic rights have expired, making it freely reusable without permission or royalty.
In France, a work enters the public domain 70 years after its author's death. Once that period has passed, the text can be freely republished, adapted, translated or compiled, which is the source of many reissue ebooks of classics sold on self-publishing platforms.
Be careful: a recent translation or an original layout of a public domain work remains protected by its own copyright.
